Glass as a metaphor for Disability
Project Type
Photography
Date
December 2024
Third year university assignment to create an artefact for exhibit that will be the basis of artefacts made for the degree final show.
Experimentation with glass as a metaphor for disability, and self reflection as a disabled woman, incorporating cyanotype to enhance the visual properties of the glass.
These first pieces of fused and slumped glass I made gave me opportunity to see how glass can manipulate Cyanotype printing.
As I researched glass it felt like a fitting material to try as it is full of contradictions, tough but delicate, heat and cold need to be balanced during processing, and a lot more that I felt an affinity with with regards to my disability and Multiple Sclerosis symptoms.
I became a little obsessed with encasing elements within the pieces and wanted to include representations of myself as one with the glass. The shaped inclusions represent my perception of physical myself inspired by the Willendorf figurine.
