A3 Cyanotype drosde self portrait
Inspired by Dora Maurer, this self portrait was created to illustrate the hidden layers of chronic illness as a woman and the disparity in care and compassion towards women by some of those in the medical field.
My art is always inspired one way or another by either my disability or my journey to a diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis and the barriers, prejudices, and dehumanisation I faced along the way.
The quote at the heart of this image had haunted me for a long time, and wanted to use this self portrait to claim my identity as a proud and happy disabled person. My life is probably that doctors worst nightmare, but I'm owning it and wouldn't want things any other way. Although too many days feel impossible, I am grateful for the well of emotion, insight, and creativity my disability brings me, along with a beautiful layer of connection I find with other disabled people, that wouldn't be possible if I were not disabled.
